Marseille soap is made the old-fashioned way in a traditional soap factory in Provence, France. Its recipe dates back to 1688. The production: The authentic soap of Marseille is manufactured in cauldron, this process of saponification, includes stages:
1st step: The mashing. The lye and the fat of vegetable origin are heated and brought to boil in the cauldron.
2nd step: The release. This operation consists in adding a very dense salt lye in order to drag the excess soda to the bottom of the cauldron.
3rd step : Cooking. Transforms the fats into soap by adding concentrated lye.
4th step : Washing. The soap paste is refined by washing.
5th step : The liquidation. A final wash with clear water brings the soap to its natural state. Then the smooth and pure soap that makes its reputation.
These different operations take about one week to ten days.
